GL wins first NWC track championship

The Glen Lake boys track and field team has made history by becoming the Northwest Conference Champions for the first time ever, showcasing their strength in a dominant performance on Wednesday at Benzie Central.

With a final score of 175.5 points, the Lakers outperformed rivals Benzie Central, Frankfort, Leland, Buckley, Brethren, and Onekama. The team excelled particularly in the sprints, with senior Boden Fisher winning the 100-meter dash, finishing a narrow 2/10ths of a second ahead of his teammate Wade Daniels, who recorded times of 11.56 and 11.58. Fisher is a back-to-back 100-meter conference champion.

Glen Lakes’ Liam Palmer and Hunter Cox provided depth for the Lakers, as Palmer finished fourth in the 100 (11.74) and Hunter Cox finished third in the 200-meter dash.

Colebrook Sutherland took home back-to-back wins in the 800-meter run and mile with times of 2:05 and 4:46. Sutherland also claimed a victory in the mile (4:46). Glen Lake sophomore Abrahma Feeney had himself a day with runner up finishes in the mile and two-mile (4:47, 10:37). Laker junior Caden Sheehan also earned a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (45.88).

The Lakers won three out of four relays: Samuel Dykstra, Hunter Cox, Fisher, Daniels (4x100, 45.52); Noah Scott, Cox, Liam Palmer, Ben Selby (4x200relay, 1:37); Abraham Feeney, Eli Maule, Liam McCaw, Lincoln Bailey (4x800-relay, 8:41).

The Lakers also handled business in the field events, as Dominic Stein cruised to a discus chip with a throw of 122’ 1”.

Jacob Plamondon won the high jump (6’0”), and Fisher won the long jump with a 19’1.5” length. Plamondon also finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.97.

Leland freshman Carter Suttmann finished third in the 400 at 54.31. Glen Lake senior Noah Scott and freshman Palmer finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Leland senior Colby Connor finished fourth in the 200 and seventh in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.01 and 24.70. Comet freshman Christopher Knudsen finished seventh in the mile (5:05). Leland sophomore Breckett DeFour finished second with a personal record jump 5’8”.

Girls Results

For the girls, Leland and Glen Lake competed in the tough conference championship competition.

Glen Lake freshman Carmella Julian and sophomore Lydia Fosmore were the lone girls conference champions.

Julian won her title with a blazing fast time of 12:42.

Leland senior Ella Knudsen finished second in the mile at 5:41.

Fosmore dominated in the long jump, jumping 16’0.25” to capture the individual championship.

Glen Lake sophomore Lydia Fosmore, Avery Flores, Janai Misner, and Emily Alaimo finished second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 54.9. The same team finished second in the 4x200 relay (1:53).

Glen Lake junior Jadelynn Miller finished fifth in shot put with a throw of 27’3”, with Leland senior Alyssa Korson finishing sixth, Glen Lake freshman Emma Bosscher finishing ninth, and Leland freshman Alivia Stachnik finishing 10th. Korson took fourth in discus with a 94’ 5” throw, while Glen Lake’s Miller, Scarlett Vanderlinde, and Bosscher finished 5, 6, 7.

Leland senior Mya Denoyer and sophomore Ellen Schwaiger finished 8th and 9th in the 400 (1:12.73, 1:12.88).

Glen Lake and Leland will be heading to the Frankfort Invitational Saturday.

Frankfort Invitational

Leland and Glen Lake competed in the last regular season track meet Saturday at the Frankfort Invitational.

Plenty of runners used the invitational as one last tune-up before the regional competition, which is set for East Jordan at 10 a.m.

Glen Lake sophomore Lydia Fosmore was dominant in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 3.5 inches.

Leland senior Ella Knudsen won the mile at 5:42. Her teammate Natalie Burpee ran to a first-place finish in the two-mile with a time of 13.08.

Mya Denoyer, Burpee, Ellen Schwaiger, and Knudsen won the 4x800 with a time of 11:21.

Alyssa Korson took home first place, finishing with throws of 26 11” and 91 4” to go into regionals feeling confident.

Glen Lake juniors Scarlett Vanderlinde and Jadelyn Miller finished second in shot put and second in discus.

On the boy’s side, Glen Lake took home the boys’ title, behind the quick feet of Samuel Dykstra in the 100-meter dash (12.30) and Liam Palmer in the 200 (25.27).

Laker phenom Colebrook Sutherland breezed to an 800meter and two-mile finish to go into regionals ready to run as one of the premier athletes. Leland freshman Christopher Knudsen won the mile with a time of 5:05 and is poised to be heard at regionals.

Glen Lake’s 4x100 (Porter Martin, Dykstra, Boden Fisher, and Noah Scott) and 4x200-relay (Ben Selby, Liam Palmer, Fisher, Scott) teams were dominant with times of 47.03 and 1:38.

St. Mary competes at Kalkaska Monday

The Eagles track & field teams competed at Kalkaska on Monday before heading to the regional.

St. Mary juniors Oliver Mitchell and Garrick Collins shined in the 400-meter dash with times of 54.37 and 55.16.

Mitchell finished third in the long jump (17’11”).

On the girl’s side, Elizabeth Grant captured first place with a throw of 100 feet 5 inches in discus and finished second in shot put (29’ 4”).
