An increase in water rates is being considered in the Village of Suttons Bay.
For the first time in 17 years, the council is considering raising the rates on water from the municipal system.
State mandated improvements are resulting in massive one-time water rate increases for communities throughout the state.
“We do not feel this is in the best interests of our residents and businesses; therefore, we are taking an incremental approach intended to avoid an abrupt increase in rates that could otherwise be detrimental to those residents living on a fixed income,” stated a notice for May 19 meeting during with the council will consider two charges to water bills.
In an effort to offset the cost of state mandated improvements to our water system, the council is considering an incremental increase to your water ‘Ready to Serve’ rate and water cost per 1,000 gallons of use. As proposed, residents could see an increase in the “Ready to Serve” rates as follows:
• Current rate — $9.58+$2.40 = $11.98 (new 2025 rate).
• New 2025 rate — $11.98 + $1.79 = $13.77 (new 2026 rate).
Commercial businesses will also see an incremental increase in their costs.
Residents could also see an increase in cost per 1,000 gallons used as follows:
• Current rate $2.95 + $1: $3.95 (new 2025 rate).
• 2025 rate $3.95 + .70 = $4.65 (new 2026 rate).
The Council will receive comment on the proposed rate increase at their regularly scheduled meeting, Monday at 5:30 p.m.
