STRs discussed in Cleveland

Short-term rentals (STRs), spring maintenance, a 2025 insurance package, and cost of rebuilding the town hall was discussed last week by the Cleveland Township Board.

The board passed a zoning ordinance in May 2024 that went into effect on Jan. 1 of this year. The ordinance limits the number of STR permits in the township to 36.

As of last week, 31 of the 36 available permits have been filed and approved.

Supervisor Tim Stein gave a short review of township maintenance. He reported that the boat launch is open, the dock has been put in with new bumpers, and he plans on personally putting in a new float ring by the end of the week. These are in preparation for summer and more urgently, the usual influx of fishing boats on the lake starting around this weekend. Additionally, the watering system for the cemetery has been turned on for the season and the new HVAC system has been installed in the town hall.

In other business during the May 13 meeting the board:

• Approved a motion to pay the insurance package from the Municipal Underwriters of West Michigan for 2025. However, Stein discussed wanting to speak with other townships to compare their insurance packages before landing on one for 2026. This decision was also approved by the other members.

• Briefly discussed the cost of possibly rebuilding the town hall with the current estimate being around $737,000.

The meeting concluded with Stein informing the board members that he was asked to and gave his support to Leelanau Township in forcing the county to consider adding another half million dollars to the road maintenance fund that is currently capped at half of a million. Stein’s statement was well received by the other board members.
