New library camp in Empire

The Glen Lake Community Library (GLCL) will be offering a new kids program this summer thanks to a memorial donation received last year.

The new program is open to all kids grades 3 through 5 and is simply called Library Camp. The camp will take place for only one week starting Monday, June 23 until Friday, June 27 with each day’s activities starting at 10 a.m. and going until 1 p.m.

The idea behind Library Camp is to get kids oriented to the library and engaged in creative projects. Some of the planned activities include a writing workshop, nature sketching, and a petting zoo field trip. There will also be an emphasis on STEM (science, engineering, technology, math) subjects.

The funds for this new program come from a large donation made in early 2024 in the name of Bonnie Sloane Yingst. Lifetime library lover and former Empire resident, Yingst had an incredibly distinguished career as a scientist. She not only earned multiple degrees, advanced pivotal research, and won many awards, but also had a passion for mentoring and training students in her lab and across the world.

Her family designated funds for the GLCL that will be used for this summer’s library camp and other future initiatives that will help build better connections with area students, especially at the Glen Lake schools.

Library Camp isn’t going to be anything very fancy, just a great way to keep kid’s brains engaged this summer and give parents three hours to themselves.
