To the editor:
I am very pleased to see that several of our local library leaders attended the Michigan Library Association’s annual Library Advocacy Day at the Capital. Our local libraries are vital to our communities. One of the focal points of the day was the defunding of the Institute for Museum and Library services and how it will affect libraries.
I had recently written to U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, who represents northern Michgan, regarding the defunding of IMLS. In his response, Mr. Bergman diminished the value of this funding. I must disagree. Without MelCat, which is a statewide service to share materials among libraries, one of the services supported by this funding, many library users would not be able to access the materials they need.
If you value your local library like I do, please contact Rep. Bergman at Bergman.constituent@ mail.house.gov or call his Washington office at 1-202-2254735 or his Traverse City office at 1-231-944-7633.
He should be supporting library services for HIS constituents. Nancy Bujold Cedar
