Approximately 186 people registered their vehicles at this year’s Northport Cars in the Park show at Haserot Park. Although the weather was mildly overcast and cool Saturday, hundreds of car enthusiasts and spectators gathered for Leelanau County’s longest running auto show.
Leelanau Township resident Tom Van Pelt’s original Sleeping Bear Dunesmobile was chosen for the show’s flyer this year. Show organizers typically choose a classic, local car for the flyers, so Van Pelt’s 1956 Oldsmobile convertible known as the Sleeping Bear Dunesmobile fit perfectly.
“It’s (the Dunesmobile) part of the history of Leelanau County,” Van Pelt said Saturday, adding that he’s been a regular Cars in the Park attendee since the show began in 1998. “I usually always bring this car to the show. This is one of 10 that was made special for Sleeping Bear Dunes — it’s something that just needs to be shared with the public.”
