The local nonprofit ShareCare of Leelanau is set to host its second annual adult spelling bee fundraiser on June 28 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Lake Leelanau. The returning guest judges this year are Ron Jolly, morning show host for WTCM, and Joe Charlevoix, chief meteorologist at 7&4 News.
Leelanau resident Mike Sheehan, ShareCare’s beemaster and board member, has been helping to facilitate senior spelling bee fundraisers for decades now. When he retired in 1994, Sheehan said he wanted to do more for the community, so he started to get involved with various senior fundraising initiatives, specifically spelling bees, an event that many fondly remember from their youth.
About five teams participated in last year’s ShareCare spelling bee, so they’re hoping for a bigger turnout this year. All proceeds raised through the spelling bee will benefit ShareCare to help in providing services to senior citizens. Sheehan said it’s great if teams can get sponsors like support from friends, family or businesses because it ultimately helps to raise funds for the organization and its continued efforts to provide programs/services to seniors in the community.
