In search of hidden gems? Shop secondhand

The unofficial kickoff to garage sale season over Memorial Day last month meant not only was I most likely going to have to write about them being held again, but also that I was bound to come across some unique, vintage finds while doing so. I already love secondhand/ thrift shopping and do it year-round, but writing an article about it is always a great reminder of the many hidden treasures you can come across if you search long enough. If you’re aiming to save money, want to support your neighbors and local thrift stores, and don’t mind gently-used items, then I highly recommend shopping secondhand before choosing the ‘new’ option first.

During my garage sale search/adventure last month, I found several exciting finds in Leelanau County for our home, including a few precious framed artwork pieces, vintage Avon glassware and perfume, and even a couple of pots to use for tomato plants in my garden. If you go in with limited funds (mine was $25), you’ll have to search harder, but you’ll prioritize things that fit within your budget and that you might need more than the things that you don’t.

There were also larger items for sale that were out of my budget, but were amazing to find and take note of nonetheless. One such item being an antique Victorian bed frame that I came across on the last day of an estate sale in Northport. Beside a small stain towards the middle of the frame, it was in immaculate condition and was half off because it was the last day. Other than at an antique store or maybe on eBay, I’m not sure where else you could find such a special item for a good deal.
