Dearwood, Sutton among first white settlers
C. DEARWOOD H. DEARWOOD

The following news story and photo was taken from Kathleen Firestone’s book, “Suttons Bay, Peshawbestown and Bingham Shores of Grand Traverse Bay.”

Cassimere Boischer Dearwood arrived in what would become Suttons Bay Township, when he came from Canada to explorer Marquis Amar De Belloy on the twomaster schooner, Oglebay moved on to explore other areas, including Provemont settlement (Lake Leelanau). Cassimere Dearwood is recorded as the first white landowner in the Suttons Bay area, applying for a land patent in fall, 1854, and receiving it June 10, 1856.

While wanting for his land patent to arrive, Dearwood married 17-year-old Henrietta LeDuc at Ontario, Canada, and brought her to settle with him on the new property.
