GL budget; federal funding in question

Glen Lake is one of two local districts receiving federal Impact Aid from the government to compensate for the loss of property tax revenue resulting from the creation of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Now, roughly $4 million in tax revenue is certainly not guaranteed in the budget.

“The biggest thing was we didn’t include Impact Aid; we’ll wait to see if and how much we get before adding it back in,” Glen Lake Finance Director Ben Papes said. “I believe Congressman Bergman that the program will continue but didn’t say at what level it would be funded. Currently, the section of Impact Aid that we receive from is only funded at about 10% of what the law states, so hopefully, they won’t cut into it even more.”
