To the editor:
I would like to address a topic that has been debated for generations: the behavior of teenagers. Criticism of youth is nothing new — they’re often labeled irresponsible, immature, reckless, or short-sighted. Science tells us this can be attributed to a still-developing prefrontal cortex, or perhaps the natural turbulence of adolescence.
However, the recent frontpage article about an underage drinking event reflects more about our community’s values than it does about the youth involved. The public discourse that followed — especially among adults — has focused more on blame and reputation than on support and growth. This short-sighted reaction overlooks the long-term consequences: mental health struggles and a culture of shame that often follows young people into adulthood.
