The Leland Township Board voted 4-0 to approve the appointment of Brian Fenlon as an alternate to the planning commission at a special meeting June 19.
Clint Mitchell, Leland Township supervisor, said the planning commission has five members: Ross Satterwhite, Steve Scales, Skip Telgard, Sam Simpson, and Lee Cory. Satterwhite, Telgard, and Cory all recently recused themselves to avoid conflicts of interests as the planning commission reviews zoning and other development details pertaining to the Old Art Building’s (OAB) expanded campus project. This left the commission with just two members, Scales and Simpson, that could work on the ongoing OAB project, so Mitchell said they aimed to have someone appointed as an alternate to provide for a quorum before the group’s July meeting. Before the action to approve Fenlon as an alternate was approved, new trustee Greg Kuntz recused himself from participating as a trustee and voting on issues relating to the appointment of any person to the planning commission due to his involvement and residential proximity to the OAB campus expansion project.
“This is going to be a great opportunity for Brian to just kind of get his feet wet and on an issue that matters,” Mitchell said. “He is on the county planning commission, so he has had some experience in that regard… I think he would be a good addition. This is just for an alternate going forward, we will have some open spots that I think he’s going to be interested in serving in as well.”
