Leland Township Public Library’s ‘Leelanau Summinars’ series, which kicks off with its first event July 1, will host a lecture on July 15 at 4 p.m. that focuses on Iran, the Middle East, and foreign policy.
Dr. Christina Michelmore will look at the US-Iran relationship in the context of Iran’s historical place in the Middle East. How does Iran fit into the wider Middle East and how does that shape its objectives in the region? How have US policies addressed Iranian intentions and actions and have they been successful?
Christina Michelmore received her BA from Smith College and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania. She lived and worked in the Middle East for seven years — In Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Pakistan. In 1984, she joined Chatham University’s history department, which she chaired off and on for 30 years. She wrote academic articles on American views of Muslims and Arabs and contributed to Op Eds on U.S. Foreign Policy. After 9/11, she focused on public education focused on Middle Eastern people, cultures, and politics. She directed the “Communities of Islam” program in 2002 and was named Pennsylvania International Educator of the Year in 20042005. She retired in 2014.
