New Omena Historical Society exhibits
Members of the Omena Women's Club enjoyed a wonderful in-depth tour of Leelanau Cheese and the cheesemaking process last week. Nik Basford, center, led the tour which was very interesting and educational, and concluded with some wonderful cheese-tasting. Courtesy photo

The Omena Historical Society is now open for the season, and is hosting a special Social Hour this Friday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The public is welcome to come see the two new exhibits, “Deer Camp” and “Places in Time.”

The Omena Women’s Club’s June meeting was a tour of Leelanau Cheese. Their caveaged European style raclette cheese have been made in Leelanau County with local milk since 1995. Their creamery focuses on production of Raclette and fromage blanc, available in a variety of flavors. Their Raclette received a Super Gold award at the 2023 World Cheese Awards competition, the highest ranking in the competition. It was one of just 100 cheeses at the competition that received a Super Gold award. Over 4,000 cheeses from around the world are typically in the competition, which is hosted by the Guild of Fine Food.

The fascinating tour included going into the caves where the cheeses are aged and then seeing the production room. Dating back to early cheesemaking, caves provide an environment with constant, cool temperatures, and high humidity that is perfect for aging cheeses.
