Fifth Street will perform in the Empire Area Community Center’s next free concert, Sunday, June 29.
The band started as The Turtlenecks 25 years ago when Michael Sullivan (guitar) and Norm Wheeler (flugelhorn) stared busking on Union Street in Traverse City, or playing fir lunch sandwiches at Folgarelli’s.
Their blend of jazz, bossa novas, and Sullivan’s swinging originals soon earned them cocktail hour and restaurant gigs at Funistrada, Leland Lodge, Boone’s Long Lake Inn, and other prime local venues.
