Leelanau History

5 YEARS AGO July 2, 2020

Leelanau without a Fourth of July party is like … well, we’ll soon find out. An argument can be made that no community in Michigan celebrates the Fourth as earnestly as the county. Parades, fireworks, patriotic singing, and flapjacks flipped by Glen Lake firefighters have become the lexicon of Peninsula folks and friends celebrating the birth of our nation. But most events have been canceled due to a certain pandemic that has turned lives across the globe upside down. *** Water and electricity don’t mix.

And concerns about this volatile combination were the topic of a special meeting of the Leland Township Harbor Commission and the Leland Township Board this week. The groups held a joint meeting via Zoom Tuesday to consider urgent action to address concerns at the harbor as the Lake Michigan water level continues to rise.
