Council 2025-26 budget approved

The Northport Village Council unanimously approved its 2025-26 general fund budget totaling $859,011 at its regular meeting on June 13. The budget goes into effect at the start of the new fiscal year on July 1. Like other municipalities, the village is required to establish a budget prior to the end of the current fiscal year on June 30.

Approximately $628,911 from current real property taxes, a $30,000 increase from the 202425 property taxes of $598,509, makes up most of the revenue in the general fund budget. Marijuana tax revenues totaling $62,000 also made up a significant contribution of the general fund revenues, as well as state shared revenues of $56,000. The village’s marina fund revenue total is $844,800, with $271,500 of that sum coming from seasonal dockage as well as $233,000 in gas sales. The water fund, another source of revenue that makes up one the village’s largest funds, is $282,860, with $156,000 coming from sales and $110,000 from contributions from other funds.

Separate from the general fund is the village’s sewer debt retirement fund, which has a total of $473,241 in revenues, whereas its operation expenses is $623,261. The sewer debt fund 2025-26 projected net fund balance is listed as -$150,020 due to the village having a deficit in terms of what they’re collecting in revenue and what they will need to close out the bond for the sewer fund that matures in 2028. Jered Ottenwess, village manager, said it’s not a shortfall in terms of the cash on-hand as they are able to make their upcoming debt service payments, however, they don’t generate enough revenue to meet the budgeted expenditures.
