To the editor:
Another, “hey, look how rich we are” project, a boat house, is likely going to be built on the increasingly fragile Leland River. This project, which is not only unnecessary for the protection of watercraft, is also an eye-sore for those of us who have used the river for decades and threatens one of the most difficult-to-navigate areas of the river, making it even harder for the average boat user to navigate safely this narrow waterway. Just because you have a permit to build something, doesn’t make what you want to build appropriate for the community.
These projects are being built by newcomers, perma-fudgies, who have no understanding or appreciation of what the Leland community stands for, which is an unassuming, “let’s fit in” rather than “let’s stand out”, ecologically mindful environment. These newcomers “don’t get it”, and as long as our local government operations refuse to take ownership in protecting these invaluable natural areas by creating protective regulations and policies, the reason this area is so attractive to visitors, home buyers and builders, will slowly turn into the same areas they are running away from when they come here.
