Sweet cherry harvest begins

Nothing beats the taste of fresh-picked Leelanau sweet cherries as tractors and helpers ramp up for the harvest season starting now.

“We have some volume for various varieties, and several other varieties were hit hard,” Phil Hallstedt said, owner of Hallstedt Homestead. “It’s a challenging season. Less cherries and more birds.”

The popular U-pick venue in Leelanau Township will have Cavaliers, White Golds, Summits, and Ulsters available for purchase.
