The historic influence of Port Oneida is felt at every step, on every bike ride, and during every tour of America’s oldest rural historic district, according to Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB) Director Susan Pocklington.
“Port Oneida is so special because it’s got this beautiful pastoral landscape, and it is not as well known or as populated in terms of visitors as (other places in Leelanau County),” Pocklington said. “That’s what makes it so special, is that it has a lot of opportunity to sit on a porch and reflect on what life was back then in the 1800s or the early 1900s. It allows time for reflection, for solitude, and immersing yourself, taking a step back as if you were back in that period. I see people out there sitting and writing.”
Whether you’re photographing, painting, or hiking around Port Oneida, brings a wonderful sense of history and beauty.
