The 45th Parallel just south of Leland lies a popular tourist attraction, and it’s more simple than people realize, yet it controls quite a bit of business in the county.

The 45th Parallel, the location halfway between the North Pole and the equator, brings tourists in for pictures of them with the sign.

The geographic designation was created at the Treaty of Paris in the 1760s to act as a border between the United States and British North America after the American Revolution. This is what set boundaries between Quebec and New York.
