Materials management: a tri-county project

Back in July of 2024, the counties of Benzie, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse teamed up and submitted a notice of intent to theDepartmentof Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy about their materials management plan (MMP).

The main focus of the plan is to focus on sustainable materials management approaches. In a recent update given to commissioners at a recent meeting, Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Director Lydia Gulow, said that there is focus on reducing the impact of material choice on our natural resources.

“There is a legal requirement, materials management plans are required by amendment to Part 115,” Gulow said. “The idea here is that the changes focus on sustainable materials management approaches such as recycling and composting instead of primarily disposal.”
