This Thursday, July 17, five years after his death on this day, John Lewis will be remembered and honored by many organizations throughout the country by the peaceful, non-violent action he was known for. John Lewis was a renown civil rights leader and Congressman from Georgia for over thirty years. He encouraged people to “get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.”
Lewis is recognized as a lifelong advocate for voting rights, an issue at the core of The League of Women Voters of the United States. As such, the LWVUS is one of the partnering organizations for the nationwide day of Good Trouble Lives On, on July 17. Locally, the League of Women Voters of Leelanau County is remembering John Lewis by encouraging you to register to vote if you are not already registered and to vote in every election. Informed voters are key to our democracy.
John Lewis said, “The vote is the most powerful non-violent tool we have.” Today, let’s remember that an informed vote is essential. The LWVLC strives to inform voters on issues that are important to them. Throughout the year, we hold public forums to which all are invited. Last year, we had presenters on affordable housing, renewable energy, accessibility in Leelanau County and the importance of dark skies during the night. We will continue our informational programs during the coming year.
