Father honored for heroic Lake Michigan rescue
A typical family outing to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on a sweltering July day in 2024 devolved into a lifethreatening situation, but one man’s quick action saved the lives of the whole family.
A year later, on July 18, 2025, Marcin Arszylo accepted the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Citizens’ Award for Bravery while standing in a visitor center with his kids, park rangers, and government representatives. Sleeping Bear Dunes Superintendent Scott Tucker gave the award in appreciation of Arszylo’s selfless efforts to save four individuals who had been swept out into Platte Bay in Lake Michigan by strong winds.
