Enjoy, be mindful on local trails

It’s somehow already mid-July, but that means we’re about two months away from the fall equinox. As a big autumn season fan, keeping this in mind is getting me through these warmer than usual summer days.

But on the days that are cooler, heading out to any of the local hiking and walking trails has been a go-to activity that I’ve enjoyed for the last five years of living in the region. In a recent Enterprise Diversions’ section, we highlighted all things hiking in Leelanau County. I focused on the subject of trail etiquette, something often overlooked by users. Just like with any public space, it’s always important to keep in mind basic etiquette/decency, whether that be by staying on the designated trail path that you set out on, exercising caution at road signs and coming to a complete stop, or keeping pets on a leash to ensure the safety of both animals and fellow trail users. Although these are just some suggestions specific for the TART (Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails) Trail network, polite behavior and consideration can be applied to really anywhere you go.

There’s so many other examples of trail etiquette and how to be mindful when using one, so it was great to learn of the initiatives TART Trail staff have been pursuing to help educate people about the subject. The nonprofit established their very own trail etiquette campaign called “culture of kindness,” which aims to teach people to be respectful of others around them while sharing the same space.
