A historic bicentennial barn in Maple City is currently in its restoration phase and will need helping hands from the community to be completed.

New home and barn owners’ Scott and Tamara Stone closed on the Maple City property located off W. Harbor Highway last October and have been busy doing what they can to restore it in the meantime. The historic barn, which stands as a landmark and symbol of Leelanau County’s history, is in need of various repairs, however, the post and beam construction of the barn itself and roof structure are in good condition.

Scott said one of the biggest appeals of the property when they first discovered it was the beautiful land it was on and surrounded by. The couple, who are relocating from Ferndale downstate, have been visiting Leelanau with their family for the last 25 years and have always loved the area. As a retired metallurgist, Scott also envisioned how they could restore the property structures to reflect the same farmhouse styles common around Port Oneida. Scott said he had never owned a barn before, so embarking on the overall restoration process utilizing his woodworking skills was something he was excited to pursue.
