After decades of development plans, the former Sugar Loaf Resort in Cleveland Township has new life, with plans to be acquired by the Leelanau Conservancy, which has locals excited.
“It’s going to be a win-win because nothing was happening there,” said Mark Fisher, a ski school director for Sugar Loaf in the 70s and 80s. “The conservancy is the right people to take over versus seeing it as a development and seeing condos or whatever else all over the hill.”
Fisher said that during the time he worked at the resort, from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, it was the best period the resort had seen.
