About 17 miles off the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula lies South Fox Island, which features a light station that steps back into mid-1800s maritime life.
Volunteers come from all over the state to help at the ancient South Fox Island Light Station that has been seeing renovations for over 20 years.
“It’s a step back in time and it’s a step away from all the electronics, “said Cathy Allchin, vice president of Fox Island Lighthouse Association. “Some people have service, some people don’t, we make sure at least one team member has service to the mainland and we maintain daily contact with them.”
