LEELANAU HISTORY

5 YEARS AGO August 6, 2020

Use of the N-word by an elected member of the Leelanau County Road Commission to describe African Americans this week earned a sharp rebuke from the Road Commission chairman. Road Commissioner Tom Eckerle was asked by a fellow commissioner why he was not wearing a face mask at this week’s Road Commission meeting when Eckerle responded, “Well this whole thing is because of them (n-----s) down in Detroit.” Road Commission Chairman Bob Joyce quickly interjected: “You can’t say that!” *** A new state government order could force fruit growers in Leelanau County to pay migrant workers for up to two weeks wages while they quarantine, provide COVID-19 testing at their own expense and offer isolated housing to workers who test positive or were exposed to the virus. Those are some of the more invasive requirements of the order. But some companies that hire migrants may already be taking similar steps as required by the U.S. Department of Labor.
