Leland Twp. fire/rescue millages OK’d

Leland Township’s fire and rescue department renewal millages passed easily during its special election held Tuesday despite having just a 29% voter turnout. Approximately 597 ballots were cast out of the 2,040 registered voters, according to Leelanau County’s unofficial election results.

The fire and rescue millage to renew and increase the expired township emergency medical service and firefighting operation passed with 446 votes, about 75%, while 148 people voted no (24.92%). The second proposal on the ballot to renew the expired millage for funding and equipment and training for the township fire and rescue department passed with 496 votes, about 83.50%, a large contrast to the 98 people, 16.50%, that voted no.

The fire and rescue equipment and training millage will be renewed at and increased in the amount of up to the original voted 0.50 mill ($0.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) and levied for three years beginning 2025 through 2027 on all taxable property within Leland Township. It’s anticipated to raise an estimated amount of $346,570 in the first year the millage is levied.
