Northport Village Council trustees discussed its updated list of compiled short term rentals (STR) currently operating in the village at its work session on Aug. 7, noting that a total of 51 STRs are listed online or are permitted. The “actual total operating and/or permitted STRs” in the village is 47 though.
Following discussion from last month’s council workshop regarding the status of STRs and the need to have a list to track them, village manager Jered Ottenwess gave an overview of the best available information they had found thus far. In July, the council agreed that a housing task force is not needed and instead directed the village manager to continue tracking STRs and to send notices to unregistered owners.
In the process of gathering up to date information, Ottenwess reported that he recently sent nine certified letters to property owners who had listings, but never registered with the village. In addition, it was noted that five owners have submitted STR registration applications and have been approved; that two owners have not responded to the certified letter; and that another owner was incorrectly identified as the owner, so their property was not being used as an STR. One owner started using the property as an STR in May 2025 and did not receive a required special use permit, however, Ottenwess said he reached out to the owner about the issue, informing them that he would delay any further enforcement action until he could speak with the council about STRs being a “broader issue.”
