The following is an excerpt from the Suttons Bay Sesquicentennial Celebration book, published in 2004.

The first school in the Suttons Bay region was held in a log cabin on the farm of Andrew Palmer, located on the bay shore about one-half mile east of the present business section. This farm was lated owned by E.A. Peck.

The first school teacher was Ida Palmer. She taught there in the summer of 1860 with only six pupils in attendance. The number of students doubled during the winter term of 1861. Ida Palmer later became Mrs. Jacob Weigand. Sarah Alward taught in this school in 1866. She married Melville Palmer, son of Andrew, and continue to teach after her marriage and while rearing her first three children.
