The Northport Arts Association (NAA) is presenting a very special exhibit showcasing its visionary founding members. The exhibit is “The Originals: NAA Founders Showcase, A Retrospective of NAA’s Roots.” This group of people began meeting in 2013 and paved the way with their time, vision, dedication and passion to make NAA what it is today.
The opening reception for the exhibit is this Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Village Arts Building in Northport. The exhibit will run through September 9 and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. There are also volunteer opportunities available at NAA, helping with the opening receptions and being a docent at the exhibits. In addition to The Originals exhibit, in September they will have their first invitational exhibit, and the “When Form Meets Function” exhibit of 3-Dimensional art is in October. Being a docent is a great way to see the exhibit in more detail after you’ve previewed it at the opening reception. More information about volunteering is available on their website.
I want to put in a personal plug for the fundraising campaign to make the VFW Post 7731 building in Lake Leelanau accessible. I have been acutely aware of its inaccessibility since my stroke in 2015. I have had to be carried up the stairs there in order to attend weddings and fundraisers half a dozen times. I have decided not to attend more events than that because I didn’t want to put myself or others through that. It’s something you don’t think about if you’re able-bodied, but it really struck me once I no longer was. It was even more amazing to me that it was a VFW Hall, serving veterans, which includes many who are aging or wounded.
