Swanson, a basketball icon, writes novel

Local women’s basketball icon Julie (Polakowski) Swanson has published her second book “North of Tomboy,” loosely based on her experience growing up in Leelanau County in the 1970s.

Swanson was a member of Leland’s two-time state basketball champions; once held the state single-season scoring record 812 points and was named Michigan’s first “Miss Basketball” in the state and went on to a successful career at Michigan State.

“This is a project I worked on for years,” Swanson said from her home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
