A recently completed mural titled “We Are One People” honors the Indigenous people of the Grand Traverse region and will be placed in the narthex of the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City later in September.

Community members gathered at the church for a mural opening celebration on Aug. 14, wrapping up the last month of work by the artists part of the Intercontinental Biennial of Indigenous Art (BIAI) group, a collective of artists from around the world who share Indigenous stories through art.

Five artists helped bring the artwork to life, including two regional Anishinaabe artists Janelle Dalhberg of Traverse City and Darryl Brown of St. Ignace. Three Latin American artists also made the 36 footwide mural possible, including realization director/lead artist Fabian Anton Navarro from Lima, Peru, Gustavo Toaquiza of Quito, Ecuador, and Diana Zyan of Mexico City, Mexico. Funding for the mural was made possible through a grant from Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation of Midland, Michigan.
