Thank you, farmers

To the editor:

Thank you, Farmers! Summer days are coming to an end — all too soon in my book. From June through August, we enjoyed the delicious bounty of Leelanau farms. Early on we ate asparagus from Coldwell Farm Market on Alpers Road and strawberries from Bardenhagen’s. On Fridays we scoured the Northport farmers’ market and turned tart cherries from Bakker’s Acres into pies. We bought CSA quarts of sweet cherries from Hallstedt Farms. From the small stands along M 204 we’ve filled our baskets with produce. All season long we enjoyed stopping at Bell’s of Christmas to select what we needed for dinner including vegetables such as potatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and all varieties of fruits including terrific blueberries. We even bought a cookie or two. As the season progressed, we ate black raspberries from the small stand on Swede Road and peaches from the wagon at Overlook Road. We also bought peaches at Jelinek Orchards stand on the corner in Suttons Bay and made homemade peach ice cream. As the season ends, we slather butter on the wonderful sweet corn from the stand at Novotny Road or from Hall’s near Moomers. Yes, we stopped at Moomers. We pass by many other small stands that we have yet to try because we do have our favorites from which we fill our kitchens and then our stomachs, savoring each bite that our terrific farmers have provided. Again, thank you.
