Glen Lake opened their season on the road against St.Francis, a matchup that hasn’t been played since before COVID-19, but there was no lost feelings with St.Francis winning 30-6.
“They are a great program, they lived up to the hype,” said Glen Lake coach Jesse Smith. “I always say when it comes to the game, we win, it’s my guys did their job, we lose it’s on me.”
After two opening drives that didn’t create much offense, St.Francis started driving down the field late in the first quarter. This drive was stopped when a pass was thrown into the end zone
and intercepted by Glen Lake senior, Fletcher Middleton.
The rest of the first half was back and forth until St.Francis broke through scoring the first touchdown of the game with 1:05 left in the half.
Glen Lake went three and out in the following possession, and on 4th down, a dropped snap on the punt attempt led to a safety, giving St.Francis a 9-0 at halftime.
After receiving the second half opening kick, Glen Lake drove all the way down to the St. Francis 17 yard line and fumbled the ball which was recovered by a St.Francis defender.
Glen Lake got a stop on defense and after a quick drive was forced to punt once again. The snap was sent over the punters head but recovered by Glen Lake forcing a turnover on downs. This led to another St.Francis touchdown extending their lead.
On the Lakers’ final possession of the game, Middleton broke off a big run of 50 yards to bring the Lakers back into St.Francis territory. A couple plays later, senior Sam Dykstra finished the drive by scoring a 34 yard touchdown in the final minute. On the point after attempt, there was a bad snap and the Lakers were unable to convert.
The Lakers attempted an onside which was recovered by St.Francis allowing them to run the clock out to finish the game.
“It’s one game and we have a good squad, I hope people realize that we are a serious contender in Division 8,” Smith said. “Don’t overlook this game, who we played, and now we just reload and get ready for week two.”
Glen Lake hosts Frankfort for their first home game of the season, which will start their conference play as well.
