The Leelanau County Road Commission’s new managing director, Brendan Mullane, was welcomed Tuesday to the Road Commission’s first public meeting since membership on the elected body dropped from five to four last month. One of the five elected road commissioners, Tom Eckerle, was forced to resign last month after he was heard making racist comments just before the commission’s last public meeting on Aug. 4. *** The strangest summer in recent history will conclude this weekend without the traditional bridge walks throughout the county. In keeping with the Mackinac Bridge Authority, who earlier this summer canceled the annual Labor Day Walk on the “Mighty Mac,” local organizers have canceled the three bridge walks that have also become tradition.
