A local author’s book focused on the history of the Native peoples of the Midwest and their 500-year struggle to defend their homeland is receiving statewide recognition.
Robert (Bob) Downes received a book-of-the-year award from the Historical Society of Michigan for his nonfiction history, “Raw Deal: The Indians of the Midwest and the Theft of Native Lands.” Within the book is a chapter on the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) in Leelanau County.
The state history award will be presented at the society’s annual awards ceremony in Alpena on Sept. 26. Published by Downes’ own company, The Wandering Press, “Raw Deal” won the award in the society’s private printing category, meaning a non-university press.
