The Leelanau County Housing Zoning Atlas Project was made possible for Leelanau County with support from Rotary Charities of Traverse City and Huntington Bank. In partnership with the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) and the National Zoning Atlas Team (NZA), Housing North is working with key stakeholders to bring this interactive mapping tool to Leelanau County.
What is a zoning atlas? It is a digitized version of the zoning code on an interactive mapping interface showing what land is zoned for housing and where you can build duplexes, triplexes and more. Go to zoningatlas.org and see the results for Leelanau County and others. The goal is to help our communities both visualize the existing zoning and better understand the types of zoning in their communities that limits higher density housing. It can streamline the process for a developer and for planners and community organizations to understand where zoning changes could occur to meet the housing needs and where additional infrastructure may be needed.
Why did we choose Leelanau County for this project? The Regional Housing plan for Region D (NW Michigan) has a goal to complete a zoning atlas and the Leelanau Housing Action Strategy also recommends it. The project reflects a collaborative effort by local organizations committed to advancing housing solutions.
