From apple slices to action

In a few short weeks, the Leelanau Conservation District will be hosting its annual 5th Grade Field Day with students from across the county at Veronica Valley Park. The goal of this event is to provide a hands-on, outdoor experience that fosters an appreciation for the natural world while also highlighting the role each of us play in conserving our natural resources.

In a county that’s defined by its natural beauty and abundance, it’s difficult to envision the loss and degradation of what we so easily take for granted—but let’s pause for a moment and join a group of Leelanau County 5th graders to consider just that.

Imagine your favorite apple. Honey Crisp? Sweet Tango? Northern Spy? Now take that apple in your hand and let it represent the Earth. There are currently 8.2 billion people that live on our planet and each of us require food, water, air, and shelter to survive. Two of these human necessities (food and shelter) require soil.
