While cooler weather signifies fall is well on its way, local farmstands in Leelanau County are still very much in supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other delicious treats.
In-season fruits like apple varieties, peaches, and pears are all abundant at this time of year and people looking to make a stop at any farmstand will likely come across similar produce. Jelinek Orchards has two farmstands open daily, one just off M-22 at 608 St. Joseph Street in Suttons Bay, and the other in Northport at 5282 N. Jelinek Road. Sara Jelinek was out stocking the Suttons Bay stand on Monday with peaches, nectarines and apples — the apples, she added, were just starting to be harvested this season. From Honeycrisps and Ginger Golds to Dandee reds and Zestar apples, she said they have quite a few varieties coming up in the weeks ahead, as well as other popular produce like peaches, pears and plums expected by the end of the week.
“The peaches have been really popular and they’ve been going probably close to a couple weeks now,” Jelinek said. “Honeycrisps are always a popular apple, but luckily, we have a wide range of different varieties available, so usually someone can find something… We’ll have the stand in Suttons Bay set up until at least the end of October, so we still have a couple months. It’s been a pretty good year for the fruit. We’re definitely thankful and we appreciate everyone’s support.
