The Leland Township board voted 3-1 to approve a Hancock Field design plan at its regular meeting on Monday evening, keeping them on schedule to continue moving forward with the project. Trustee Shirley Garthe was the opposing vote, and clerk Lisa Brookfield was absent.

At the township’s July meeting, the board approved a proposal for Gosling Czubak Engineering to formulate design and cost plans for Hancock Field. The final conceptual plan was estimated to not exceed $9,300, and the board reviewed and approved the design this week. Some of the additions and improvements to the park, include, but are not limited to: ADA-compliant parking, eight pickle ball courts, a playground, a basketball court, and a little league baseball/softball field, along with the demolition of a grandstand and dedicated space for a seasonal ice rink with lighting accommodations.

Based on Gosling Czubak’s draft site plans, the estimated total project cost to improve and update Hancock Field is $1,748,198. The addition of eight pickleball courts is anticipated to be one of the highest costs, $640,340, included in the project, followed by the playground, exercise equipment, and basketball court construction estimated at $333,221, as well as the parking area work for $225,175.
