Fatal crash on M-22: Alcohol believed to be factor

A 2-car accident on S. West Bay Shore Drive (M-22) near Walters Drive was reported after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, where a 61-year-old man was left dead, and four others injured after a 2025 Chevrolet pick-up truck crossed the centerline and crashed into a Honda SUV.

A 2-car accident on S. West Bay Shore Drive (M-22) near Walters Drive was reported after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, where a 61-year-old man was left dead, and four others injured after a 2025 Chevrolet pick-up truck crossed the centerline and crashed into a Honda SUV. 

The Honda was operated by the 61-year-old from Ohio. 

The male driver of the truck, as well as the three other passengers, were treated at Munson Hospital for their injuries.

This incident remains under investigation, according to the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department. 

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Elmwood Fire/Rescue, Suttons Bay Fire/Rescue, MMR, Benzie County EMS, and the Michigan State Police.

Traffic was closed nearly all day before finally opening at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
