LEELANAU HISTORY

5 YEARS AGO September 17, 2020

Kathy Thoreson and her mother, Marilyn Flaska, could only watch as the family business went up in flames.

Leelanau Redi-Mix on Newman Road in Kasson Township was destroyed by fire Saturday. “The cleaning lady couldn’t get the door open,” Thoreson said. “When she did get in, she saw the smoke. But she didn’t have her cell phone. So she had to run to the neighbors to dial 9-1-1.” *** When the novel coronavirus first started up in the U.S. back in January, no one could have predicted the pandemic would still be going on six months later. COVID-19 has impacted almost everyone’s life, either directly or indirectly. One possible benefit for county public schools is that most have seen an increase in student enrollments as families have relocated to Leelanau County to get away from COVID-19 heavy areas in larger down state communities.
