High school reunion; military promotion

Omena resident Debby Disch and Omena seasonal resident Susan Siemer were both at their 60th high school reunion last weekend in Cincinnati, where they attended Walnut Hills High School. Susan was already back in Cincinnati, and Debby drove down for the event. The weekend was lots of fun, and the weather was beautiful. Debby said she would be just fine if she never saw another orange cone.

Debby and her four siblings, including Omena resident Rink Smith, were all third generation Walnut Hills graduates. Their grandmother, Marguerite Stewart Rule, had attended it shortly after it opened in 1895, at its original location. Debby’s mother, Martha Rule Smith, and two of her seven siblings, had also attended. Debby only went there her senior year, since her father had been transferred to Milwaukee when she was in the fifth grade. You will hear about her other high school when we both go to that reunion in a couple of weeks. Rink attended starting his sophomore year, and the three younger Smiths attended all six years.

Walnut Hills has been recognized as a college preparatory school since 1935, and is consistently in the top 100 high schools nationally. This year, U. S. News and World Report named it the #1 high school in Ohio.
