Summer garden yields: food, flowers, and peace

As the autumnal equinox fast approaches on Monday — the best time of year if you enjoy the cooler temperatures and vibrant fall colors — I’d be remiss if I didn’t reflect on me and my mom’s small but mighty garden this summer.

Over the last two years, I’ve set up our garden oasis along the side and in the back of our house. Each summer and despite many of the seeds failing, it’s managed to grow in size and vegetable/ flower varieties. Some of the perennials I grew in the first year even came back.

For a number of reasons, it took me a while to start a garden. We’ve been in our rental for about four years now and this September marks five years since I first moved to the area. When I did learn that I could in fact spiffy up the outside with some flowers, I jumped at the opportunity to make this space feel a little bit more like our own and bought more seeds than I knew what to do with. I learned the hard way that either the deer or dry weather conditions often led to many of the plants/vegetables in the ground dying. This year, I focused more on growing in pots rather than in the ground though and it’s made a huge difference. I continue to learn something new about my plants everyday.
