Ground has been broken for the Freshwater Research and Innovation Center at Discovery Pier in Elmwood Township.
A group of partners including Northwestern Michigan College (NMC), Michigan Tech, Discovery Pier and more held a ground breaking ceremony at the site of the new center Friday.
“What makes the whole center unique is the collaboration of all those,” said Jason Slade, vice president for strategic initiatives at NMC. “It’d be really easy just to design a center that only did one of those things, but it wouldn’t have the economic benefit for Leelanau County.”
