The advance of Chronic Wasting Disease through the Michigan deer herd ground to a halt in 2024, coming no closer to Leelanau County.
The MDNR in 2024 asked hunters from 22 counties to provide deer heads for CWD testing in an effort to determine the extent of the disease, which has been found in deer in mid and lower Michigan. And hunters responded, providing 3,258 heads including 154 from Leelanau.
None tested positive. Isabella remains the closest county to Leelanau with a positive case.
