Suttons Bay football scored in the last second to earn its first win.
Suttons Bay football hosted Baldwin Friday night, beating Baldwin 36-34, earning their first win of the season.
"Tonight proved what type of young men we're dealing with," said Coach Tony West. "They stayed together as a team, they overcame adversity, and they supported each other."
Suttons Bay opened the scoring after a stop on defense, as senior Urijah Two Crow found an open senior Zachariah Raphael for a 43-yard touchdown, taking a six-point lead.
After another defensive stop, Two Crow did it himself with a 52-yard rushing touchdown, followed by sophomore Easton West converting on the two-point conversion, extending the lead to 14.
After a back-and-forth second quarter, Baldwin got on the board with just under a minute remaining, but didn't convert on the two-point conversion because sophomore Julius Sanchez got to the quarterback and recorded a sack.
After a quick drive for the Norsemen, Baldwin scored once again with eight seconds left and was stopped on the two-point conversion, bringing the score 14-12 at halftime.
TwoCrow scored a 65-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, and the two-point was converted by West once again.
Baldwin responded quickly with their own score by senior Jalen'e Allen, his second of the game.
The next drive, on a 4th down and 14 yards to go, West scored a 20-yard touchdown on his first snap as Quarterback. Junior Shane Boyle converted the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 30-20.
"I could never be more proud of those boys," West said. "I would do anything for them, even stepping into a position I've never played before."
Baldwin's Allen scored his third touchdown shortly after, and with Baldwin scoring the two-point conversion, the Norsemen's lead was down to two points.
With both Boyle and West switching who was playing quarterback, neither played the position normally. Suttons Bay's offense lost momentum, but the defense still held strong until Baldwin returned an interception to the Suttons Bay ten-yard line. A couple plays later, Baldwin broke through, taking the lead for the first time all game, 34-30.
TwoCrow returned to play quarterback for the last two drives. The first was a quick turnover, and the next was a 40-yard game-winning drive, which was capped off with TwoCrow finding Boyle in the endzone with one second left to take the lead 36-34.
"I didn't have a target all night, so I was left wide open," Boyle said. "I saw the ball in the air, and I was thinking, don't drop this, this is my moment."
On the following kickoff, the clock hit zero when Baldwin had a short return.
Suttons Bay will travel to play Marion next Saturday at 7 P.M. before returning home to host Onekama the week after.
